Throwing Shade: Abaxa Backing Skin Checks To Protect Workers

Abaxa Skin Checks

Sun safety, skin cancer prevention and a deeper commitment to team wellbeing.

At Abaxa, safety isn’t just something we talk about, it’s something we live every day. As Western Australia’s leader in subsurface detection and utility risk management, we know that looking after critical infrastructure starts with looking after our people.

That’s why we’ve built a strong culture around health, safety and wellbeing, on and off the worksite.

Sun Safety and Skin Cancer Awareness

With much of our team working outdoors across WA, we face an often overlooked but serious health risk, sun exposure. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and outdoor workers are disproportionately affected.

That’s why we’ve proudly joined the #ThrowShade initiative to raise awareness of sun safety and support proactive skin cancer prevention across our workforce.

As part of this initiative, we’ve partnered with Shade Skin to offer professional skin checks in Perth to our team, helping catch early signs of sun damage and support long-term health.

Our aim is simple: encourage early detection and give our people access to the right tools and education to protect themselves on the job and into the future.

Our Broader Commitment to Safety

Abaxa Outdoor

Sun safety is just one part of a much bigger picture. At Abaxa, our 3 Degrees of Safety System helps us prevent underground strikes and workplace injuries by embedding risk assessment into every stage of a project. It’s a system we’ve developed over 16 years and one that underpins our reputation for reliability.

We’re also certified to ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 9001 (Quality Management), helping us maintain world-class safety and performance standards.

A Culture of Accountability and Care

Health and safety isn’t just the responsibility of our leadership team, it belongs to everyone.

Our people are actively involved in safety planning, toolbox meetings and continuous improvement processes. That shared ownership is what makes our safety culture so strong.

We’re committed to reviewing and refining our systems to ensure they remain fit for purpose and forward-thinking, especially as we grow and take on more complex projects across the state.

Looking Ahead

Our partnership with Shade Skin and the #ThrowShade initiative reflects what we stand for as a business; care, accountability and long-term thinking. We’re proud to support initiatives that not only reduce risk on the job but also support the long-term health of our team.
